What Are Friends For?

Friends are for love.

My journey in love continues and each day I learn more about love than ever before. First, the realization that God loves me through anything and everything I do. Whether I am good or bad, He still loves me. That kind of unconditional love astounds me, yet it comforts me to know that no matter what I do in life, I will be loved forever. As stated in Romans 8:38-39, no one or nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!

Now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.

1Corinthians 13:13

Out of everything we can hope for in life, God says that the greatest gift is love.

I have spoken these things to you so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. This is My command: Love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you slaves anymore, because a slave doesn’t know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from My Father.

John 15:12-15

As I get closer to God, I discover the love my Father has for me and the importance of love to be found in friendship. I discover that God considers me His friend. How cool is that? God is my friend and I am a friend of God!

What are friends for?

As I search in the bible for verses that explain what it means to have friends, I have come to the realization that we are designed to have friends and we are ordered to be good friends to others.

Proverbs 17:17
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a difficult time.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts. For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up.

Proverbs 18:24
A man with many friends may be harmed, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother.

Proverbs 27:5-6
Better an open reprimand than concealed love. The wounds of a friend are trustworthy, but the kisses of an enemy are excessive.

Blessed by Friendship
My dear guests, I must share that I have been blessed with God’s greatest gift of all… the gift of love and not just any kind of love, but the love of a true friend who is someone I cherish, someone I can say that I would go to the ends of the earth with, someone I can share my life with, someone who doesn’t judge me, someone who sees me and all my flaws and loves me just the same.

This friend of mine is a confidant, for sure. At the same time, I trust my friend to offer counsel when it is needed.

I can run to my friend in all things –  to share joyous times, as well as to cry in times of sorrow and know that my friend will lift me up and carry me though whatever I am suffering.

The greatest gift you will ever receive in life is the love of our most High and Gracious God. His love is undeniable and His love lasts a lifetime and beyond. And, in His love for us, He grants us with the love that can be found in friendship, a valuable gift to be shared with others during our lifetime on earth.

It is my hope and prayer that you would be blessed this day in God’s love and that you would find a friend on earth to love and to be loved into eternity.

Today’s Video
That’s What Friends Are For, performed by Dionne Warwick and friends Gladys Knight, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder.

This song captured my heart, particularly the chorus which speaks to a basic component of friendship.

Chorus:
Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That’s what friends are for
In good times and bad times
I’ll be on your side forever more
That’s what friends are for

The Gift of Friends

Friends for Life!

Life is filled with trials, tribulations, and a whole lot of stuff that can bring us down and as scripture shows, we cannot live a fulfilling life without friends.

God asks us to have good friends who can help guide us through this life on earth.

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2

This year, I have had the great fortune of re-discovering a friend who I have known since high school. We have rekindled a friendship flame that the Lord started some 49 years ago. Guided by the Lord, we lift each other up in prayer and we love each other in the spiritual manner in which the Lord blesses among friends.

Sweet friendships refresh the soul and awaken our hearts with joy, for good friends are like the anointing oil that yields the fragrant incense of God’s presence.

Proverbs 27:9-11 The Passion Translation (TPT)

I encourage you to keep close contact with your friends and also to make a re-connection with an old friend. When you engage in developing a lifelong friendship, you will be amazingly rewarded by the kind of love that sustains your life and builds your hope for the future.

Faithful friends are the gifts of love that last a lifetime.
